Depression
What do I do: If I am concerned that my friend might be depressed.
- Many people who experience depression become paralyzed by it. Try to imagine what they are feeling. Envision yourself being enveloped by a black cloud. This is what depressed people feel much of the time.
- Avoid telling them to “stop being depressed.” It’s like telling someone “not to breath.” They can not just stop being depressed.
- Ask them about suicide. Have they considered, or are they currently considering suicide?
- Encourage them to seek out the help of a trusted adult. Consider talking to their parents about your concerns.
- Help your friend try to understand that depression can be an illness and they do not need to be ashamed of it.
- Call the HopeLine (1-800-394-HOPE) to talk or visit www.dmlive.com to chat with a live person.
