Eating Disorders
What do I do: If I want a Christian perspective?
Research confirms that a “Whole Person” approach in addressing eating issues is best. That means addressing not only the physical, intellectual and emotional aspects of the struggle, but also the spiritual aspects which play a role in how we see ourselves, our bodies, and our identity.
As a Christian organization, we believe that a Christ-centered approach to this spiritual piece is critical, and we encourage you to explore options that include this perspective.
Here are some great places to start:
- At our partner website www.findingbalance.com you will find helpful videos and articles that feature a Christian perspective on eating issues, including a whole section called “Spiritual Aspects.” You can also reference their article, “Finding Treatment,” which details key things to look for in a counselor.
- If you need inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment, consider going to a Christian treatment program. Remuda Ranch (www.remudaranch.com) and Selah House (www.selahhouse.net) are two great options that provide balanced, Christ-centered care with very high success rates.
- For less intensive support, you might consider visiting a Celebrate Recovery group in your area. This is a Christ-centered 12-step recovery group that has meetings in every major city. To find a group near you visit www.celebraterecovery.com and click on target="_blank">“Find a Group”. As with finding a counselor, keep in mind that not all groups may be sensitive to the unique needs/triggers/issues associated with disordered eating. If you find yourself triggered or ‘stuck,’ in a particular group, reach out and see if there might be something that is a better fit.
One more thing… this may sound cliché, but don’t forget about the power of prayer. God knows exactly what you need, how much you can afford, and where you live. He also knows those who are passionate about helping bring healing to those who struggle with this issue. Ask him to lead you to the ‘right next step’ as you pursue a life of freedom from disordered eating. It’s the life you were created for!
