Living with your Boyfriend or Girlfriend

What do I do: I want a Christian Perspective

The ultimate in a committed relationship between a man and a woman is marriage. This is by God’s design.

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)
There are many dangers in cohabitation that cause concern from God’s perspective. The Bible teaches that we should run away from sexual relationships outside of marriage. Living with your boyfriend or girlfriend puts you in a compromising situation where sex is most likely to occur often.

Another danger to living together is the emotional confusion that typically arises. It is confusing for someone to say “I am committed to you enough to move in with you, but I don’t want to commit my whole life to you”. This leaves you in an emotionally vulnerable state as you are asked to invest a lot into the cohabitating relationship, which can end abruptly as there is no real long-term commitment.

God loves you and has plans for your life. Cohabitation is not part of God’s plan. It falls short of His design, which is intended to protect and nurture you as you experience God’s grace in its fullness.

What God desires most is for you to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ.
