Pornography
What do I do: If I want a Christian perspective?
God is holy. That means that He is perfect and that he has never done anything wrong. When we do something that offends God it is called sin. From a Christian perspective, pornography use is offensive to God for a few reasons.
- Sex is a gift of God and is a good thing when occurs between a man and a women who are married to one another. The sexual images offered by pornography are not real, they are objects. Anytime people are made to be objects God is offended. This is because God created man and women in His image. Man and woman are highly valued by God and should be valued and treated with the utmost respect.
- Pornography usage leads to lust. Lust is when you look at someone and fantasize about having sex with them, or doing sexual things with them. God says that we should run away from lust. By using pornography you are running to the lustful thoughts. Remember sex is good and is a gift of God, but God sets a rule for sex: you must be married to enjoy the benefits of a sexual relationship. God sets this rule for our own good because he knows of all the dangers that come along with having sex before you are married.
- Pornography sets up expectations in your mind about sex that are often just not true. People who create and publish pornography are very good at selling their product and making the user feel like the man or woman in the pornography are there just for them to enjoy. The truth is that the men and women in the pornography are being used and when the cameras are off they are normal people who get paid to be in the pornography. The false expectations that are created by the pornography can make enjoying sex with your marriage partner very difficult and can lead to sexual dysfunction. This is part of why God says to wait for sex until you are married.
If you have been using pornography, God offers forgiveness and He promises to meet all of our needs. Not only that, but He promises to give us whatever it takes to stop using pornography. That is a pretty amazing promise, but it is true! In order for this to occur, however, you need to consider asking Jesus Christ to forgive you of your sins and to take control of your life. This is what it means to be a Christian.
