Love Addiction and Its Symptoms

Love addiction is a type of behavioral addiction triggered by the feeling of being “in love”. Love addiction is a lot like other addictions where a person obsessively and compulsively tries to relieve or medicate the deep pain in their life with feeling loved. In fact, the feelings of a love addict are just as false as the high a drug addict feels. The intense physical feelings of euphoria you have when you’re in love produce effects similar to using addictive substances. Infatuation creates a high, which can crash or dissipate quickly. Someone addicted to love becomes fixated on chasing that feeling, so they develop an unhealthy focus on the object of their affection.

Have you experienced these symptoms of love addiction?

• You think about the person you love constantly. You feel desperate for their time, attention, and approval.
• You have an intense fear of neglect or abandonment, which you feel can only be satisfied by thinking about or being with this person.
• You are focused exclusively on them – what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, where they are, how you can think about them again, when you can see them again, and so on.
• You crave the feeling that you get when you think about them or spend time with them, with an intensity that you can feel physically, like hunger or thirst.
• You forget or minimize the importance of self-care or neglect to take care of your own basic needs.

Not being with someone you love, or not being in love with someone, makes you feel physically ill or emotionally distraught.
While romantic love addiction is most common, you can also have intense cravings for attention and affection from familial or friend relationships. However it affects you, it is important to be aware of love addiction to avoid developing unhealthy relationship patterns.

Physical

There is a significant amount of stress that comes from love addiction. Over time this stress can negatively affect your overall health. This may lead to digestive issues, body aches, headaches, and interrupted sleep patterns. It's common for someone with a love addiction to be sexually active in many of their romantic relationships. This will increase the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.

Emotional

Love addiction causes emotional frustration as you feel confused about your relationships, your unquenching need to feel loved and your desperation to do whatever it takes to feel loved. You may feel at ease when a relationship is going exactly how you want, but when it's not perfect you may have an overwhelming fear of abandonment. You may feel a sense of shame about the choices you are making which are driven by your love addiction, and regret when you repeat these behaviors, regardless of the cost. You likely struggle with feelings of self-hate as well and look to relationships to fix what's broken inside you.

Spiritual

When struggling with love addiction, you tend to give your heart and soul away to anyone who gives you any attention. You put all your focus on a particular relationship and neglect yourself in the process. Everyone’s spirit longs for connection and love, but when we try to fill that spiritual need with attention from an imperfect human, we are never fulfilled. We must seek self-love and greater purpose, or we will remain empty inside.

The Consequences of Love Addiction

One of the most reassuring things about faith is knowing that you can start small, from right where you are. If you’ve been through pain or trauma – whether it’s because of physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual abuse; toxic relationships; addiction; or grief and loss – the idea of remaining faithful or growing your faith in the face of trials is overwhelming. It may even seem impossible. You’re not alone in this feeling. There is hope for when you feel trapped by your struggles:

“I say to you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20, New International Version

When you are willing to take even the tiniest steps toward God in faith, He will be there to meet you right where you are, to help you, heal you, and strengthen you along your journey.

Treating and Healing from Love Addiction

Love addiction treatment options are similar to treatment for other addictive behaviors:

• Seeking out a support group or 12-Step-Program such as Celebrate Recovery.
• Seeing a therapist or counselor who is trained to treat love addiction.
• Pursuing healthy friendships and activities, and distancing yourself from people or environments who encourage your addictive behavior.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

The desire to be loved is placed inside us at a very young age. It's natural. God created you with this longing for love. But His desire is for you to seek and accept His perfect love.

God loves you simply because He loves you. You don't have to work for it. It's unconditional. God's love can heal a wounded heart. There is safety in His love. No matter what happens in life, His love is always faithful. You can strengthen your faith in God's love is by reading about it in the Bible. Here is just one of hundreds of verses about His love for YOU - For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you [insert your name] will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the LORD, who has mercy on you. Isaiah 54:10.
